Background

Thomson Reuters is a global provider of multimedia news and information tools. It operates as a partner for enterprise customers by providing trusted data and intelligence in the legal, tax & accounting and news & media industries. As a lead designer, I worked on Thomson Reuter's web-based editorial application for creating and editing text stories, Lynx Editor Online. End-users of the tool which included correspondents and editors revealed frustrations with lack of robust collaborative features that would allow for better traceability on story editing progress and version control. They also expressed having difficulty locating relevant news stories within the existing search engine.

Approach

The editorial product team conducted contextual inquiries to capture the current story editing experience, which we documented using personas and user journeys. We audited existing user flows to identify and validate workflow challenges from the discovery process. We crafted revised user journeys and derived a set of features to inform the design process. Focusing on research-led design execution. we engaged with correspondents and editors across the world in multiple rounds of usability testing using interactive prototypes, and used the analysis to validate our solution and iterate on insights gained from their feedback.

Results

  • 33% increased velocity of published stories
  • 100% satisfaction reported by correspondents and editors with story editing workflow enhancements
  • 40% reduced time to search for and locate a desired new story
